All the wines are made of grapes, and the final product varies greatly, depending upon the soil condition, place, climate, moisture conditions and processing by the winemaker. Grapes of white wine are grown in many regions, and in Europe, they are mainly found in Germany, France, Italy and Austria. In US, white wine grapes are mainly grown in New York, California, Washington, and Oregon. Additionally, these grapes are grown in New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Chile.
Different Types Of White Wines
Most white wines are lighter as compared to red wines. Chardonnay grapes are grown all over the world, and are a versatile variety. Chardonnay grapes can produce most complex wines, and a lot depends on the growing regions, and process of production used. Chardonnays are golden, full, with velvety touch, and usually have high acidity.
Chenin Blanc is another type of white wine, and has been cultivated in Loire Valley of France for thousands of years. It is widely grown in California, and this grape is used widely in various inexpensive table wines and jug wines. Character of Chenin Blanc is fruity and light, and it has higher level of acidity.
Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio is another type of white wine, and the character of the grape varies widely as per the growing region. Pinot Grigio that is grown in Europe is more acidic as compared to its American counterpart, and it has more prominent citrus aroma. Sauvignon Blanc is yet another type of white wine, and is also known as Fume Blanc. It is grown in California, South Africa, New Zealand, and Loire and Bordeaux regions of France. It is crisp, slightly acidic, and is blended with Semillion.
Vopgmoer and Semillion are unique types of white wines. Viognier is mainly grown is California and France. It has hints of apricot and peach, and has moderate acidity. Gewurztraminer is a very aromatic type of white wine, and goes well with pork, grilled sausages and Asian food.
Reesling is another type of white wine, and goes well with chicken, fish and pork dishes. It is grown in all the wine regions, and each variety has a unique touch. These wines are much lighter, and have the aroma of fresh apples.
Before buying any white wine, taste it when cold. Note the color, smell and taste, and then choose as per your preference. There are all kinds of wines available in the market these days, including cheap white wine. A good wine usually costs more, but there are some good white wines that taste well despite being cheap.
